Candidate Courses
Last updated: 3 Feb 2007

'Candidate Course for recognition' implies that a course proposal should, if implemented in the way anticipated (and taking full account of any comments made by the visiting group), enable the course's subsequent consideration for validation. It does not, however, confer recognition, which can only be granted following a full Visiting Board that inspects the quality and standards of the output, and which is held following graduation of the first cohort of students from a new course.

Definition agreed by Executive Committee on 2 June 1999.

Students enrolled on Candidate Courses are eligible for RIBA Student Membership.

Scotland’s National Centre for Architecture, Design and the City has been created from two new buildings attached to an existing building. The existing building, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, is the one remaining building of the former premises of the Glasgow Herald newspaper. Page and Park Architects left the fabric of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh building virtually untouched by inserting, on one side, a vertical circulation and service foyer reaching the full height of the building. This foyer gives access to galleries, education, IT and children’s areas, a café, and finally a new viewing tower with lift access for all. On the other side, a building housing essential ancillary accommodation was added. The original water tank tower now contains a beautiful spiral staircase, connecting the Mackintosh gallery with a rooftop balcony overlooking the centre of Glasgow.
