This original approach to school design caters for 240 pupils. It develops the theme of the contained garden. This creates a secure safe place within the walled enclosure. The garden is an invitation to play, to adventure and to learn. The teaching elements of the School are designed as a sequence from nursery through reception class to the older children and to express the idea of a spiral and a progression. The external envelope is made of red brick containing a softer timber boarded to the inside courtyard spaces. The School is designed to operate under the extremes of both the summer and the winter and is constructed so that its section and plan optimise the use of natural heating and ventilation.
